Taking Christmas out of Christmas

I was reading a blog post by a friend, Jeremy Sarber at candcshow.com. His latest post gave spark to a  thought I would like to share with you.

Until recently, I used to get worked up whenever a business attempted to remain neutral when it comes to Christmas. I remember, a few years ago, getting really worked up when Lowes Home Improvement stores renamed the traditional ”Christmas tree” to the “Holiday tree” in a sale ad. It really made me mad. I was going to embark on a full-fledged boycott of Lowes.

Then there was Target who instructed their employees to greet with “Happy Holidays” and forbid employees to say “Merry Christmas”.

Recently, I have done a 180 and I will tell you why. I started thinking, what if someone came to me and threatened to boycott me because I was saying Merry Christmas to them? My first reaction would be, “Who are you to tell me how I am allowed to observe Christmas”?

I then realized how one sided my view was. I came to a conclusion that anyone has just as much of a right as I to observe Christmas as they choose. I would be a hypocrite if I expected someone to change their beliefs just because I demand it or else, when I would likely reject their theology if it were in conflict with mine.

One does not win souls by penalizing someone with boycotts. If we keep Christ in our Christmas and reflect God’s love to those who see things differently, than we have done what God has commanded us to do.

It should always be about winning souls, not poking our fingers in others eye.

Hope you have a “Merry Christmas”
